Crawfish Community Review

For this post, I was tasked with giving a review of someone else’s blog that’s close to mine. Why didn’t I think to look this up before? Like helloooooo, I could’ve been tasting some delicious crawdaddies from places I never knew about. After viewing a few (which I enjoyed them all), I chose the blog Crawfish Nation!! I’ve definitely been inspired.

Crawfish Nation!! is ran by West Texan, Derrick (last name not given lol), who like me, loves him some mudbugs. Though he’s from a place where crawfish is next to nonexistent, he has no issue doing the footwork to satisfy his soul. His blog is a testament of his experiences from restaurants in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi who’ve featured the all-elite boiled crawfish to their menus. He also has tips on how to boil your own delicious crawfish at home and listed interesting facts about the bug.

What grabbed me initially was the personality that popped out of the screen. He was very bubbly, yet detailed on what his rating standards were. They were very close to mine so I immediately trusted his judgement. His pictures were mouthwatering and description of the boil/sauces were tactful but real. He also included the addresses and phone numbers of the restaurants, which made me facepalm with embarrassment (duh, Ro!) lol…I’ll try to get those added to mine asap. I loved the way he used crawfish claws to symbolize his ratings to keep his page fun. Overall, he has some great insight and some places that I’ll definitely be giving a try. His blog gets a 4.5 out of 5 from me..(- deducted .5 because he hasn’t posted recently and I now neeeeeed him in my life lol).

You guys should definitely go check it out and get on the move!!

Houston’s Daiquiri Swamp

Sooo the name says it all. You know exactly why I was there lol. This new spot on the north side of Houston has been getting a lot of buzz. The daquiri was strong but flavorful and the menu was very fun to look over. It seems to be a fusion of Houston and Louisiana cultures.

Houston’s Daquiri Swamp Drink Menu

Aside from the drinks, I heard some good reviews of their food menu as well. When I went over to their Instagram, my heart stopped when I scrolled to see pictures of beautiful crawfish. This prompted me to make my way over there asap. From the pictures, they looked seasoned well and had a sauce that looked like it could give Swamp City’s a run for their money. That alone had me intrigued.

HDS’s Small Swamp Pack
I was starvinggg so the pic happened after I had already started digging in…oops lol

First I’ll start by saying that I was super disappointed to get to the window and order my crawfish just to be told that they were only selling them on the weekend now due to COVID-19 😦 . This was my last day in Houston before returning back to San Marcos so I needed to still order something rate. I decided on the small swamp pack. It came with 12 shrimp, 2 potatoes, 1 sausage link and 1 corn for $12.99. The sauce was nothingggggg compared to Swamp city so let’s just get that out of the way lol. My potatoes were hard but the shrimp were quite interesting in flavor. They were spicy but bold, I raised an eyebrow but still devoured. Ro’s rating for Houston’s Daquiri Swamp‘s boiled food is 3.9.

Swamp City

So for starters, I’ll go ahead and address that due to COVID-19, the format of this and future blogs will be a bit different than how I initially planned. With “Stay-At-Home” orders in place all over the globe, Houston, Tx was no exception. Essential places are still open and that includes restaurants without dining in. Because of this, I had the luxury of getting some boiled crawfish to go from Swamp City. Though I wasn’t able to get many pictures, I’ll detail my experience for you guys.

This Houston fave is normally packed and social distancing really didn’t stop the show. I pulled into a parking lot full of cars and people. The staff did a great job of maneuvering through the chaos. They had a two person limit inside of the lobby to order and then had a big tent outside where you could stand and listen for your order number through the intercom. I would say all in all the customer service and adaptation to the circumstances deserves a 4.7 rating from me.

I had a cluster of crab legs and they were bombbbbbbbb delish lol……*also I added some orange slices to bring a little flair to my presentation 🙂

Lastly, the CRAWFISH!! I chose the spicy garlic seasoning and was not disappointed in the least. They were juicy and flavorful through and through. The size could’ve been a bit bigger but I’m telling you the sauce made up for it all…..(I dipped my fingers and licked them shamelessly). At $7.99/lb, I would definitely go back every single time that I am in Houston. Ro’s rating is a 4.8.

Crawfish Shack & Oyster Bar

First stop on the tour is this well-known restaurant, Crawfish Shack & Oyster Bar located in Austin, Tx. Though there are multiple locations, I chose the South Austin location as it was closest and I was ready to grub!!

Let’s get started on the ambiance of the restaurant. When I first walked in, the smell of the boil seasoning hit me in smack dead in the face. My insides immediately started to dance. Also, the place was very, very packed. I wasn’t bothered by it at all because for me, it was another good sign that the crawfish just might be popping in there. But to add sprinkles on top of my uprising of joy, there was absolutely no wait time at all. The space is big enough to hold lots of hungry bellies and also has an outdoor patio to accommodate those that like to eat with a bit of fresh air. There was great music playing and even a balloon artist for the kiddos. On my scale, the location was a 5/5.

First time trying raw oysters!!!

Next up, is the customer service. Upon entering, I was greeted with a big smile and warm welcome from the hostess. Once at my table, it took no time for my waitress to arrive at the table. As expected, she immediately took my drink order and delivered it. She then helped me choose an appetizer, which I ended up trying raw oysters for the first time, so extra thumbs up for her. Another plus was that she gave me a good amount of time to decide my entrée (even though I already knew). After receiving my mud bugs, she refilled my water as needed and even brought me extra potatoes because the initial ones were hard. 5/5

Lastly, THE CRAWFISH!! The sauce was very different, I’d say. Of course, I ordered spicy because what’s the point of anything less? Lol. But they also had a kind of sweetness to them that made me pause a bit. They were boiled perfectly and the head was juicy to where it ran down my arms. Just how I like them!! The crawfish were a bit small in my opinion to be fresh at $9.95/lb but hey, this is Austin we’re talking about here. So overall, Crawfish Shack & Oyster Bar earned a 3.75 rating on my well experienced crawfish scale.

Until next time, keep it spicy y’all!

Welcome to Ro’s Crawfish Craze!!!

Hi, my name is Rommetta Robinson (you can call me Ro) and I’m from Houston, Tx. Currently, I’m an electronic media senior at Texas State University. This blog is an assignment in my Fundamentals of Digital Online Media so I am very excited to get my hands dirty in this blog/website making business. Hopefully, I do well enough for y’all to comeback each week and see what I’ve got going on.

I’m making this blog because just like the southern gal that I am, I loveeeeeee me some boiled crawfish. Growing up, I had a love/hate relationship with crawfish. I loved the flavor but I had the hardest time trying to peel them. Every time I tried, I would cut myself or end up with tiny little pieces of a tail that was already small. So, my daddy had to peel his and mine for longest lol. But I’m a WOMAN now!! I can tear them up all on my own. I love them spicy, citrusy, with butter, with pink dip, any way possible. I love them from January to December, frozen and fresh.

Lol I’m sure you’re starting to get the point. Anywho, the actual crawfish season is upon us and so I have taken the liberty to embark on a crawfish tour. I will be visiting different restaurants throughout Central/Southeast, Tx and trying out their crawfish for all the crawdaddy lovers out there like me. If you’re really like me, I HAVE to read reviews before I go out to eat places, so hopefully this will be of some help to you.

Not only will I grade their boil flavors, but also the customer service and environment of each location. My grading scale will be based upon a 5-point system for each category with 5 being the best. Small, dirt-tasting, skimped seasoning, too much seasoning and/or being over-boiled are examples of things that will get the crawfish rating docked points. As far as the customer service goes, being super attentive for like when I need more water because my mouth is feeling that super spicy but can’t stop eating point, timely food delivery, server’s attitude and menu knowledge are things I’ll be looking for to boost ratings. And no matter if the place is big or small, how comfortable I am while I dig in will be how I rate the environment.

I literally cannot wait y’all, my mouth is watering as I type this!!! Also, follow me on twitter to keep up with me elsewhere. 🙂
